チャーチモード(Church Mode)

教会旋法(きょうかいせんぽう)。
中世から16世紀にかけての教会音楽の理論的根拠とされる音組織を指す。
その後、長・短調による調性の確立の段階で旋法としてのチャーチモードは淘汰され、長調にはイオニアン・モード(Ionian mode)が、短調にはエオリアンモード(Aeolian mode)がそれぞれの調性の基盤として受け継がれた。その他のモードについてはその一部がやや形を変えてモード手法と云われる作曲技法として活用されている。
その結果語法としてのチャーチモードは7種のいわゆるダイアトニックスケール(diatonic scale)とその展開形を指し、モード(旋法)とscale(音階)との区分があいまいな形となっている。
